Every Friday at 5 PM, as the sun begins to dip and the weekend beckons, we like to take a collective breath here at Green Acres K-9 Resort. While our days are filled with the happy barks of daycare pups and the busy rhythm of grooming, we believe it’s essential to pause and celebrate the very thing that brings us all together: the incredible, unbreakable bond between humans and their dogs.

In a world that can often feel a bit heavy, we’ve made it our mission to seek out the light. We call it our "Friday Heart-Warmer." This week, we found a story that truly defines the meaning of devotion. It’s a story that reminds us why we do what we do, from the early morning yard clean-ups to the late-night wellness checks. It’s all about the love.

A Journey of Hope: The Story of Rusty

Our story this week takes us to our namesake city on the other coast, Portland, Maine. While it’s a few thousand miles from our home here in the Pacific Northwest, the spirit of the story is something every dog lover in Gresham and Portland, Oregon, will feel deep in their soul.

Meet Rusty. Rusty is a one-year-old pup with a spirit much larger than his physical frame. He traveled all the way from Georgia to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, seeking a second chance. However, upon his arrival, the veterinary team discovered something heartbreaking. Rusty was diagnosed with a severe liver shunt. For those who might not know the medical jargon, it essentially means an abnormal blood vessel was preventing his liver from doing its vital job of cleaning his blood.

The diagnosis was terminal. Rusty didn’t have years ahead of him; he likely had months, or perhaps even just weeks.

In many places, a diagnosis like that might lead to a lonely end. But the devotion of the shelter staff and the surrounding community wouldn't allow that. They decided that if Rusty’s time was short, it was going to be the most magnificent, love-filled time a dog could ever imagine.

The Ultimate Bucket List

The shelter put out a call on social media. They weren’t just looking for a foster; they were looking for a "hospice family." They needed someone with a heart big enough to love a dog while knowing they would have to say goodbye much sooner than expected. They asked for a family that would help Rusty complete a "Maine Bucket List", a series of experiences that would let him taste the very best of life.

We often talk about holistic dog care at our resort. Usually, that means nutrition and environment, but this story reminds us that the most holistic thing we can provide is a sense of belonging and joy.

Within 24 hours of the post going live, the response was overwhelming. But one family stood out. They stepped forward not with hesitation, but with open arms. They didn’t see a "terminally ill dog"; they saw Rusty. They saw a puppy who deserved to feel the Maine breeze on his face, the sand under his paws, and the warmth of a forever home.

Living in the Moment: Lessons from a Pup

Rusty is now living out his days in a home filled with "squeaky toys, snuggle sessions, and frequent, delicious meals." His new family is documenting his adventures, showing the world that even in the face of sadness, there is so much room for happiness.

One of the most beautiful parts of this story is that, despite his illness, Rusty currently feels great. He is playing, exploring, and soaking up every ounce of affection. It’s a powerful reminder to all of us. As pet parents, we often worry about the future, the "what ifs" and the eventual goodbyes. But dogs? Dogs live in the right now. Rusty isn't worried about his liver shunt; he’s worried about which toy is the squeakiest and when the next belly rub is coming.

Why This Matters to Us at Green Acres

You might wonder why an IT specialist and a team of pet care professionals are so moved by a story from across the country. It’s because we see "Rustys" every day. We see the aging labs who still have a puppy-like glint in their eyes when they see their favorite ball. We see the rescue dogs who are slowly learning to trust humans again in our boarding suites.

We believe that every dog, regardless of their health or their age, deserves to be treated like the center of the universe. That’s why we’re so picky about the farm-fresh food we offer and why we spent so much time designing our outdoor sensory gardens.

When we see a Golden Retriever puppy exploring the lavender in our yard, we aren't just looking at a dog playing. We’re looking at a creature experiencing the world with pure, unadulterated wonder.

Creating Your Own "Devotion" Moments

You don’t need a "bucket list" or a terminal diagnosis to celebrate the bond you have with your K-9 pet. Devotion is found in the small, everyday things. It’s in the way you choose a grooming service that treats your dog with patience and kindness. It's in the way you research the science of play to ensure your dog is getting the socialization they need.

At Green Acres K-9 Resort, we strive to be your partners in that devotion. Whether it’s through our pet taxi making your life a little easier, or our team spending extra time with a shy dog during their first stay, our goal is always the same: to honor the love you have for your pet.

We treat your dogs like our own family because, to us, they are. We’ve seen our own children grow up alongside our pets, and we know that these animals aren't just "services" to be managed, they are souls to be cared for.

A Community of Dog Lovers

The story of Rusty and his hospice family is a testament to the fact that humans are at our best when we are caring for our canine friends. It brings people together. It reminds us that compassion is a choice we can make every single day.

If you’re looking for a way to deepen your bond with your dog this weekend, we encourage you to take a page out of Rusty’s book.

  • Go for that extra-long walk.

  • Try a new healthy treat.

  • Simply sit on the floor and give them your undivided attention for fifteen minutes.

We know that life gets busy. We know that work is stressful and the house needs cleaning. But when you look into your dog's eyes, you see a devotion that doesn't care about your to-do list. They just want you.
