There is something truly magical about the bond between a dog and their person. Here at Green Acres K-9 Resort, we see it every single day. Whether it’s the way a Golden Retriever’s tail starts thumping the second they hear their owner’s car in our Boring, Oregon driveway, or the quiet, soulful lean of an older Lab against their human’s leg during a grooming session, that loyalty is palpable.
We often say that we aren’t just in the business of boarding and daycare; we are in the business of protecting and nurturing those incredible bonds. Since we opened our doors in 2007, our family has been hands-on in every aspect of this resort. From scrubbing the kennels to the technical work of behavioral assessments, we do it all because we believe every dog deserves a space where they can truly "be a dog." But every so often, we hear a story from our local community that stops us in our tracks and reminds us exactly why we do what we do.
This week, we’ve been reflecting on a story of pure, unadulterated canine devotion that happened right here in our own backyard: a story that perfectly illustrates the "Faithful Friends" theme we hold so dear.
The Hero of Elmira: Cami’s Cold Winter Night
Just a short drive south from our Gresham and Portland neighbors, a story unfolded in Elmira, Oregon, that has touched the hearts of everyone in the Pacific Northwest. It involves an 82-year-old woman named Karen Joyce Davis and her incredible Blue Heeler, Cami.
Karen, who lives with dementia, went for what was supposed to be a routine walk in a wooded area near her home. As the sun began to dip and the temperatures started to plummet toward freezing, Karen became disoriented and lost her way in the dense, rough terrain. When she didn't return, a massive search and rescue operation was launched.
Imagine the scene: it’s dark, the Oregon woods are thick and unforgiving, and a vulnerable member of our community is out there alone. But she wasn't actually alone. Cami was right there.
For 19 agonizing hours, Cami refused to leave Karen’s side. As the frost began to settle on the ferns and the wind picked up, Cami didn't just stand guard; she became a living heater. This loyal Cattle Dog lay directly on top of Karen, sharing her own body heat to keep her owner from succumbing to hypothermia.
When searchers finally called out Cami’s name: despite being told the dog was usually quiet and unlikely to bark: the most amazing thing happened. Cami answered. A faint bark through the trees guided the rescue team 300 yards through the brush to where they were huddled together. Rescuers later said that without Cami’s warmth and her decision to break her silence, the outcome would have been tragic.

Why Loyalty Like Cami’s Moves Us So Deeply
We believe that stories like Cami’s resonate because they reflect the silent promise our dogs make to us every day. At Green Acres, we see this same spirit in the dogs that visit us for holistic daycare. Even when they are having the time of their lives playing in our gravel yards or exploring our sensory gardens, they are always checking in. They look for that connection.
It’s why we take our "hands-on" approach so seriously. When we are out there sanitizing the play areas or working with a dog on their social cues, we aren't just "staff": we are surrogates for that family bond while you’re away. We know that leaving your K-9 friend behind, whether for a weekend trip or a workday, can be stressful. You want to know they are being cared for by people who understand that a dog isn't just a pet; they are a protector, a confidant, and a family member.
The Holistic Approach to Loyalty and Care
You might wonder how a dog develops that level of "heroic" loyalty. While much of it is instinct, a lot of it comes from the environment they live in. A dog that is mentally stimulated, physically active, and socially balanced is a dog that is deeply connected to its world.
That’s the core of our holistic philosophy. We don't believe in just "warehousing" dogs. We believe in providing a true dog environment. This includes:
Physical Exercise: Like the supervised play styles we use to ensure every dog gets the right level of activity.
Mental Enrichment: Our sensory gardens and "digging areas" allow dogs to engage their natural instincts.
Socialization: Learning how to interact with other dogs safely, which builds the confidence they need to be the "best version" of themselves.
When a dog like Cami stays with her owner through a freezing night, she is drawing on a deep well of confidence and bond-driven instinct. By choosing holistic boarding, you are supporting that same well-being in your own pet.

Caring for Our Seniors: A Special Kind of Devotion
The story of Karen and Cami also highlights the importance of senior care. As our dogs (and we!) age, our needs change. Karen needed a protector, and Cami stepped up. But as owners, we also have to step up for our senior dogs who might have medical needs or mobility issues.
At Green Acres, we specialize in senior dog medical boarding. We understand that a senior dog shouldn't just be "kept": they should be pampered and carefully monitored. We handle complex medication schedules and ensure that our older guests have the soft bedding and quiet spaces they need to feel safe. It’s our way of giving back to the dogs who have spent their lives being loyal to us.
How to Foster This Bond with Your K-9 Pet
You don't have to get lost in the woods to experience the depth of your dog's loyalty. Here are a few ways you can strengthen that bond this week:
Quality Time, Not Just "Time": Spend 15 minutes of undivided attention with your dog. No phones, no distractions: just play, grooming, or a walk.
Learn Their Language: Pay attention to their subtle cues. A dog that feels "heard" by its owner is a dog that feels secure.
Provide a "Dog-First" Space: Sometimes, the best thing we can do for our dogs is let them be dogs. Let them sniff that extra minute on a walk, or bring them to a place like Green Acres where they can run and socialize in a way that feels natural to them.
Keep Them Healthy: Regular grooming sessions aren't just about looks; they are about health and comfort. A comfortable dog is a happy, devoted dog.

Final Thoughts from the Green Acres Family
As we head into the weekend, we hope Cami’s story serves as a beautiful reminder of the light our dogs bring into our lives. We are so proud to be a part of the Boring, Gresham, and Portland pet communities. Every time you trust us with your K-9, we treat it as a sacred responsibility. We’re the ones who will be there at 6 AM sanitizing the yards and the ones who will be there at 8 PM giving that final "goodnight" pat.
Whether you need a safe place for your dog to stay while you're on vacation, a fun environment for them to burn off energy during the day, or a calming grooming experience, we are here for you. We believe in your dog, and we believe in the incredible bond you share.
Next time you see your dog, give them an extra treat or a longer ear scratch. They really are our most faithful friends.
Warmly, The Team at Green Acres K-9 Resort
