Happy Friday to all our friends, neighbors, and fellow dog lovers in the Portland and Gresham area! It is Thursday, March 26, 2026, and as the sun starts to dip behind the Douglas firs here at Green Acres K-9 Resort, we are feeling especially grateful. If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you know that every Friday at 5 PM, we like to take a moment to pause.

In the hustle and bustle of running a pet resort, between the morning feedings, the grooming sessions, and the never-ending task of scrubbing mud off the play-yard equipment, it’s easy to get caught up in the "work" of dogs. But then, a story comes along that reminds us exactly why we dedicated our lives to these incredible animals.

This week, a story has been circulating through our local community in Clackamas County that has moved us to tears. It’s a story of a dog named "Buster," a senior Golden Retriever mix, and his unwavering devotion to his owner, an elderly veteran named Mr. Henderson, who lives just a few miles down the road from us.

The Story of Buster: A Beacon of Loyalty in the PNW

This past Tuesday, the weather here near Portland was typical for March, misty, chilly, and damp. Mr. Henderson, who is 82 and walks with a cane, went out to his backyard to check on his bird feeders. In a freak accident, he slipped on the wet grass and suffered a fall that left him unable to get back up.

Mr. Henderson lives alone on a multi-acre property. His nearest neighbor is several hundred yards away, separated by a thicket of blackberry bushes and trees. He didn't have his phone on him. He called out, but his voice didn't carry far against the wind.

That’s when Buster stepped in.

Buster didn't just sit and bark. According to the local first responders, Buster stayed curled up against Mr. Henderson for over two hours, providing vital body heat as the temperature dropped. But as evening approached, Buster realized they needed help. He didn't run away; he went on a mission. Buster made his way through the brush to the edge of the neighbor’s property and barked with a persistence that the neighbor later described as "different, it wasn't a 'squirrel' bark; it was a 'help me' bark."

When the neighbor came out to see what the commotion was, Buster didn't jump on him. He simply turned around, walked a few steps toward his own house, and looked back. He repeated this until the neighbor followed him all the way to where Mr. Henderson was laying.

Today, Mr. Henderson is recovering comfortably at a local hospital, and Buster is being hailed as a local hero. When we heard this story, we couldn't help but look at the pups in our daycare program with a little extra awe. That kind of devotion isn't taught; it’s a fundamental part of who dogs are.

Why Dog Devotion Matters to Us

At Green Acres K-9 Resort, we see echoes of Buster’s loyalty every single day. We see it in the way a dog waits by the gate for their owner to return from work. We see it in the gentle way an older dog nudges a nervous puppy during socialization. We believe that the bond between a human and a dog is one of the purest forms of love on this planet.

My name is Mark Griffin, and as a "Helper" here at the resort, I spend a lot of time on my hands and knees in the grass. Whether I’m picking up sticks so the pups don't trip or personally hand-delivering farm-fresh food to a picky eater in our boarding wing, I am constantly reminded that these dogs trust us with their whole hearts.

We strive to honor that trust by treating every dog that walks through our doors like a member of our own family. We know that for you, your dog isn't "just a pet." They are your guardian, your best friend, and sometimes, like Buster, they are your hero.

The Science and Soul of the Human-Canine Bond

Why are dogs like Buster so devoted? It’s a mix of thousands of years of evolution and a unique biological connection. Scientists have found that when humans and dogs look into each other’s eyes, both experience a surge in oxytocin, the "love hormone." This is the same chemical bond that exists between a parent and a child.

At Green Acres, we lean into this science. We know that a happy dog is a socialized dog. That’s why we emphasize safe socialization. When a dog feels confident and secure in their environment, their ability to bond with their humans grows even stronger. We aren't just a place to leave your dog; we are a place where your dog’s emotional well-being is nurtured.

We often talk about the "Green Acres Way." To us, that means:

  • Space to Breathe: Our natural, grassy yards allow dogs to be dogs.

  • Personal Touch: We don't do "one size fits all" care. Whether your dog needs a quiet corner to nap or a high-energy game of fetch, we make it happen.

  • Authentic Care: We live and work on-site. When the wind howls at night, we are right here with your pups, making sure they feel safe.

Preparing Your "Hero" for Life’s Adventures

Stories like Buster’s remind us that our dogs are often more capable than we give them credit for. But to be their best selves, they need the right foundation. This includes physical health, mental stimulation, and the right nutrition.

If you’re looking to give your pup the best start, we highly recommend checking out our guide on holistic dog care. From the food they eat to the way they play, every detail matters. We’ve seen dogs come into our daycare shy and withdrawn, only to blossom into confident, joyful companions after a few weeks of our interactive programs.

A Community of Devotion

We are so proud to be part of the Portland and Gresham dog community. Seeing events like the upcoming Doggie Dash at Tom McCall Waterfront Park reminds us that our city is full of people who value their K-9 pets just as much as we do. It’s a beautiful thing to see hundreds of people walking together to support animal welfare.

We want to invite you to bring your furry hero by for a visit. Whether they need a spa day with our grooming team or a long weekend of boarding while you explore the Oregon coast, we promise to give them the same devotion they give to you.

Final Thoughts from the Farm

As we wrap up this week's story of devotion, I want to leave you with a small challenge. Tonight, when you get home to your K-9 pet, take an extra five minutes. Put down the phone, sit on the floor, and just be with them. They don't ask for much, just a bit of your time and a lot of your heart.

Buster didn't save Mr. Henderson because he was trained to be a search-and-rescue dog. He saved him because he loved him. That kind of love is the most powerful force in the world, and we are lucky enough to witness it every day at Green Acres K-9 Resort.

If you have questions about how we can help your dog stay happy, healthy, and socialized, please check out our FAQ or contact us directly. We’d love to welcome you into our family.

Have a wonderful, heartwarming weekend, Portland!

Warmly,
